Det er en stor dag for Nora Robotics. Storkarer fra Pentagon er på besøk, for å inspisere deres nye arméroboter, de mest avanserte i historien. Men så ruller et tordenvær inn. Lynet slår ned i robot Nr. 5 som får seg en real omgang i systemet. Plutselig ruller han ned fra plattformen og begir seg ut i verden. Langs veien støter Nr. 5 på Stephanie, som tror at han er en besøkende fra verdensrommet. Hun lærer ham alt om det moderne livet - t.o.m. hvordan man danser som John Travolta i "Saturday Night Fever"! Men hæren er hakk i hæl. Nr. 5 er utrustet med toppmoderne våpen og må stanses før det skjer en katastrofe. Stephanie risikerer alt for at hennes venn ikke skal gjøres om til skrot - og bevise at NR. 5 LEVER! SYD MEAD, den berømte designern bak Blade Runner, har også skapt roboten i Short Circuit. Hele tyve kopier ble bygget, for siden å ødelegges i ulike stuntscener.Wargames, som også ble laget av Short Circuitregissøren JOHN BADHAM.
